You are going to want a road bike or a hybrid. Certain types of hybrids are called "commuters." they often include features like fenders and wider tires since commuting on a bike can often be messy. However, if you envision yourself becoming more of a cyclist and doing some fitness or longer recreational rides, a road bike would be preferable. Trek offers a full range of each. Other good brands with full lines include Specialized and Giant.

I would recommend the Trek FX models. I'm currently looking to get a bike for riding in the city too. I rode the Trek 7.6 FX and loved it. The Trek 7.3 FX Disc very nice bike. You can add bike luggage racks and fenders if you like. Check out this Trek following the link at the bottom. The bike is specially made for women. Also, I would check out the Trek SU100 or SU200. Good luck.

The main thing is what city? Is it flat or hilly terrain? Weather type? All of this needs to be taken into account before deciding.
