I worked at an office where it happened more often than not and it is infuriating. I think they should take that more seriously because it's stealing just like reaching into a co-workers purse and pulling out money.

What is wrong with people? There's not enough time in the day to answer that one!
As for your office refrigerator problem, I finally gave up and brought in a dorm-size fridge that fits under my desk. Some companies may have rules against this, but my company policy only forbids appliances with open heating elements. These small refrigerators only cost around $60, and no one has stolen my lunch since!

These people are only thinking of themselves, this is a very selfish, lack of respect act and just wrong! I have worked in office environments where people have had their entire meals or their small fruit market shopping taken from the refrigerator.
Just a line that is crossed far too often!
I personally do not hesitate to write my name over all my containers, food, etc and I have also placed large handwritten signs in kitchen areas stating we all need to respect each other's space/belongings/food followed by, HANDS OFF or GET YOUR OWN!

Go to a store that has rattlesnake meat. Make a meat salad like chicken and put it in a regular salad or make a sandwich and leave it over night. If someone eats it, go around the next day asking does anyone know what happened to my snake meat salad? lol

In some offices this happens repeatedly. I've heard of people putting something in their food like eyedrops and then you'll know the thief is the one that can't stay out of the restroom that afternoon.

I am afraid I shouldn't be answering this question because I, like you, do not know what is wrong with people who do this. I have always been tempted to make something really bad tasting and see if it is eaten, but I have never had the nerve.

People are very rude. One time, a co-worker ate someone else's entire lunch without knowing it wasn't his because he didn't pay attention to what was in his lunch bag. He didn't realize it until the person came in looking for their lunch. It also irritates me when people smash your lunch to get theirs in the refrigerator. I guess it takes too much effort to move things around.

Ew that's gross ~ who knows what people are thinking. We just put our names on things around here and put them inside of paper/plastic bags and usually no one messes with them.
Good luck witht that~
