Lip piercings (whether they are lip, labret, madonna.monroe, medusa) tend to take about 2-3 months to be fully healed.
It can become infected, but that goes with all piercings. Its not 'easier' to infect than others though since every body is different. Its not likely to happen though if you go to a reputable piercer and if you take care of the piercing while it heals.
It should not be difficult to eat or speak, but usually after getting the piercing, you lip will be sore and swollen for 3-14 days. During this time, its important to be careful while eating and talking so you don't bump around the jewelry or bite you lip. Overall, it'll take some getting used to having metal near your mouth, but it won't render you speechless or unable to eat.
With proper jewelry, in gauge, length and style, it should not get in the way. Generally initial piercing jewelry for here is larger to account for the swelling, but once it goes down, you should be able to return to the piercer to have it downsized. Once healed you may wear whatever jewelry you like, as long as its comfortable and high quality jewelry (no plastics or organic materials should be used in oral piercings; Bioplast, dental acrylic, stainless steel, titanium are all I recommend.)
Check out safepiercing.org for a certified piercer in your area and go to bmezine.com for articles and information on all body mods.

Initial healing will take about 6 weeks, full healing can take up to a year.
Infections are rare if you get pierced at a reputable studio and follow proper aftercare. (Proper aftercare consists of: 2-3 sea salt soaks per day. Absolutely no oral contact for at least 8 weeks - kissing, oral sex, etc.)
Lip piercings don't usually affect one's ability to speak, but may take a little getting used to when eating.
Keep in mind that proper placement and jewelry can minimize the risk of tooth and gum damage, but can't totally negate it. Keep a close eye on your gums and if you see any damage go visit your piercer immediately for options.

mine took about 3 days. I kept the normal one they gave me in for 2 weeks before taking it out though just to be safe. But it ranges from a few days to two weeks for healing time. It is prob. the easiest piercing to get infected because of food and drink always being in your mouth. But as long as u clean it after every meal for the first 2 weeks, and use Sea Salt on it(take sea salt, mix with warm water, put on cotton ball, hold it on the piercing for a few minutes) it will stay uninfected. It doesnt get in the way speaking at all, and eating it does at first but some of the best advice I got from my friend was "eat like you did before, and act like it isnt there". Do that and it really works. What else would you like to know? lol

each person is different, so the healing process will vary from one individual to the next...as long as u follow the after-care procedures, u should be ok...no, it doesn`t get in the way, no problems eating, speaking, or anything...
