I'd say Islam and Buddhism, whichever has the highest number/fastest growing religion, it would not mean anything at all. These are just what people call themselves but it doesn't mean that they are for real.
One example I can give to you is Islam in Malaysia (and for some other Muslim nations). Islam is widespread in Southeast Asia. However, not everyone is a Muslim. They are born Muslim but some don't even bother to practice or follow their religious ideal. Same goes for Buddhism. In Thailand, it is the most popular religion there but many people just take Buddhism as a scapegoat to answer things that they don't know in their religious practices as 'Buddhism'.
So, if either Islam or Buddhism is going to be the fastest growing religion, I would say it does not necessarily represent the actual figure, just like Christians too, who are being 'numbered' just by the heads but not through their hearts.

There are many ways to track religious growth. The most used is the religions themselves. As "organized" religions attendance is reported to a governing body. From what I have read Islam is the fastest growing religion in America, especially with the African American population.

a religion growing in numbers do not means it is a good thing if the essence of a particular religion is not transmit to the believer, like if you want to be in the crowd just because there are many followers,Buddhism on the other hand,is a Universal law, each and every indiviual is a 'Buddhist',a Buddha is one who see the truth of the universe, who is able to live life according to the law of nature, remember every living being, big or small has the 'Buddha nature',it is a matter of time one find the true self, the day you find your true self you are a Buddha,so believe in yourself that you too can strive for Buddhahood, hope if Buddhism is growing,it is growing in the right direction, because the more there is the more complex it will be,may all be bless,Amituofo

According to the article, that was the growth rate in 2006. Our growth rate for 2007 was even higher. The article was not written by Jehovah's Witnesses. We are not praising ourselves. All praise goes to Jehovah God and to his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are merely "fellow workers" with God and Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:9) The truth still resonates in the hearts of honest people. They can see that other ways don't work, and are turning to God's way of doing things. Really, it's not about numbers. We are happy to see the increase, but what really brings us joy is helping others, however many or few, to know and love and serve God and Christ as we do.

there are many cults that reject the salvation of Jesus-true Islam and Buddhism=buddah predicted the coming of salvation in a messiah too-is Jesus and true christianity-I am a Jew and i believe in Jesus as my savior Messiah and best friend too.
many cults do not keep numbers scientology, moonism and others these totally reject Jesus not only in practice like Islam does but also in word
the koran and books of Buddah are outdated and irrelavant
Jesus said if you add to my word you will get plagues on you Revelation 22nd chapter
and offers salvation to all religions cults too-Rev. 1:1&3:19&20
worked for a Jew like me\
it is undertermined what is growing faster in false religions -than true faith in Jesus -because many of those in the cults and false religon are coming to know Jesus too

I always treat these numbers with deep suspicion. Does fastest mean biggest percentage growth? Largest nunber of incoming converts? Do the numbers subtract people leaving the religion?
There are lies, damned lies and then there are statistics.

Neither. The fastest growing religion in the US is Wicca.
"The fastest growing religion (in terms of percentage) is Wicca -- a Neopagan religion that is sometimes referred to as Witchcraft. Numbers of adherents went from 8,000 in 1990 to 134,000 in 2001. Their numbers of adherents are doubling about every 30 months."
