I just posted another question about skin grafts, but anyway here she goes..
Is it necessary to get a skin graft once you have recieved a bad burn? The doctor says i may need to get one but is it absolutely necessary to get one or is it just to make the scar not as bad?

Your skin is the biggest and one of the most important organs in your body. It protects you from weather, bacteria, all sorts of infections. After a burn, your skin is dead, so your body's natural defenses are lowered. Think of the skin graft as an organ transplant. If your heart stopped working, you'd get a heart transplant, your liver, a liver transplant. It's the same concept. A skin graft is essentially a skin transplant, it's necessary for your body to continue functioning, otherwise you're more susceptible to disease and infection

I saw the picture of the burn on your hand from your other question. It looks pretty nasty. If your hand doesn't heal on its own, you are going to feel burning pain on the top of your hand from the heat of the sun. It will also be very sensitive to cold weather. You are going to have to protect that burn from the elements and from injury. A skin graft would protect you from infection and skin cancer. I heard that the skin they take is paper thin, like onion paper.
