Travel by land or sea, NO, you do NOT need a passport if you are a U.S. citizen. You will need a photo I.D. and proof of citizenship, especially to return to the U.S.
Passports will be needed for land and sea travel as early as Jan 2008 (date not yet set).

If you are flying then you need your passport. If you are going by land, your regular ID is fine. Your passport is expired, you have to get a new one. I believe that in the USA you have to go through the post office or other federal office... but check out this site: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Yes, if you fly you will need to have a passport. Traveling by Sea or Land then it is a maybe.
You will also need a new passport. They expire after 15 years.

Well, I live in Michigan, and we go up to Canada all the time. I just use my birth certificate since I've never had a passport, but that may be different for non-Michigan residents or adults.
