I think that Pharaoh Hounds and Ibizan Hounds look like a deer, but they come from Egypt. If it is from South Africa, maybe a Basenji or a Rhodesian Ridgeback. All of the sighthounds look somewhat deer-like.

UMM there is a breed called Scottish Deerhound and they don't look like deer they look like irish wolfhounds. And they originated in Scottland not south africa. By looking like deer do you mean they have deer colorings? You should be more specific like saying how big and what color and up or down ears?

You could be talking about the basenji. They resemble a small deer and are native to Africa. As an interesting side not the Basenji is a barkless dog.

Greyhounds look like deers, especially when they're wobbling around trying to get up after an anaesthetic!
I also know a south african vet who says greyhounds look most like the native dogs of south africa and are therefore very common over there.

i have a basenji
they are from africa (congo)
they are often referred to as looking like a deer
you will not be able to buy puppies now, they only come into heat once a year during the fall and are usually born in december
