By a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, don't you think that if there were any intelligence in the cloud you would have gotten somewhere? It shouldn't have taken more than a few weeks to get to israel. Did they start worshipping the golden calf because the were tired of going nowhere fast?

You are right it should have taken the Israelites only a few weeks to get to Israel from Egypt- however it was not really the destination God was interested in at the time, it was the journey. The Israelites needed to learn and re-learn as we all do that God needs to be first, and to obey Him- God still protected them with this pillar of fire and clouds, however He also made it very clear, that the journey was longer than normal because they needed to submit to Him before God gave them the promise land.

You are certainly describing people.
What a miracle that they had light at night, they had a wonderful guide, but nothing would have been any good at any time for any reason.
These people are complainers, can not be satisfied, and the worship of a calf says alot about their intelligence and lust.
So shortly they were at the Promised Land [ where it was occupied by land pirates 430 years, that will not give or sell even a drink of water to these as known relatives ].
None [ but two spies ], sent to spy out the land had any thing good to say about it, such ones are held in the wilderness to their death, the congregation is cleansed of all the troublesome, before they can enter into a land, those that remain are willing to work for what they get, where seven [ 7 ] land pirate nations must be destroyed. Acts 7:1-60; 13:17-23;
Noah to 350 years after the flood, Abraham to 527 years after the flood, Isaac to 632 years after the flood, Jacob to 659 after the flood, Joseph to 712 after the flood, Job to 777 after flood, Moses to 897 after the flood and Joshua ends 40 years the 14th day New Year in 2553 - 2554 years after Adam. 1513 and 1512 BCE and Judges 11:26; 300 years at 1198 after flood no peace. WHAT A HISTORY FOR MAN Heb.11:1-40; 12:1,2; THOSE ON THE SIDE OF GOD ALMIGHTY as owner of all they see and being just and all those in HISTORY to be thankful and trusting can easy be placed on one sheet of paper after 4150 years after Adam and a few years after Jesus was in Rome as world Empire #6. How much has changed with mankind in the 2007 years since?

How they could possibly have carried enough gold to make a calf is beyond me anyway. I suspect that they were tired of following someone who had no clue where he was going.

It could've been just that. Science is finding that some didn't even follow him out of Egypt but instead sailed to somewhere in Italy... maybe they were the happier ones.
