I think they are sold as capons.

Oh...that is even sadder what Vegan is saying...I thought this was bad..but you don't really see much of capons at the grocery store...grinding them up live as fertilizer or suffocation in a plastic bag...very sad...

I saw on "Dirty Jobs" how they sex chicks by squeezing the poop out of them (and somehow from that they know and throw them into separate boxes). That seemed kind of cruel to do to baby chicks...

My guess would be that once they become too old to breed, they're used for animal feed. Just a guess.

They do sell neutered roosters (called "capons") in the grocery store. I see them usually between Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

You'd know it if you were buying a rooster instead of a chicken. They're about 3 times the size. :)

This is not a direct answer to your question but some cross-talk about other answers:

A Capon is a Rooster that has been castrated at a young age. They become a non-aggressive male that can serve as mother to baby chicks.

Pretty sick and twisted. But they are good eats! Lots of fat that keep them well basted when cooking.

For all the people who think it's sad to manipulate animals for food, keep in mind that if you are going to EAT... SOMETHING has to die. Plants, animals, whatever. It's the way of the world. Food is life from death.

The rooster is making more hens. As with everywhere in the animal world the male is more valuable. Now a capon is a young hen. When the dish is Coq au Vin it is the old tough rooster that is used. As for the vegan, do they wear leather shoes and belts? I bet that old cow laid down and died for them didn't it?

male chicks are gassed (a la Auschwitz)
ground up live for fertilizer
or simply tossed into garbage bags to suffocate.

A small percentage (<%1) are kept for breeding purposes.
