i was watching a movie last nyt about these girls that were being brought up in this convent (you know how back in the day if you had a baby or something your parents would send you away to a convent and the baby would be given up for adoption)...well anyway, it got me to thinking that i've just never encountered a 'nice' nun. isn't that how they are supposed to be? why are they so bitter then?

Not true.
We have a great Aunt who's a nun. She's loads of fun. 70+ years old, dresses like everyone else except for certain special occasions, still walks in marathons. She even has a martini once a week with loads of olives.

You need to get out more.

How many nuns have you ever met? 4 or 5? And you judge them all by that.

I'm a Catholic. I know TONS of nuns. Most of them are hysterical! There are less sour puss nuns than there are sour puss people in the secular world.

Nuns don't suffer road rage. Nuns don't do drive by shootings. Nuns don't need to shoulder you out of the way to get in front of you at the grocery check out.

And yet there is this idea that they're all bitter. Which is FAR from the truth.

Hello, Bossylee:

First of all, why were you not reading the Bible instead of polluting your brain with Hollywood propaganda?

Second, the Catholic Church forces none to remain--certainly we have heard of the sexual abuse of nuns, but that is a rarity.

I question the doctrine of celibacy--it has drawn sexual deviants into what should be pure system, remember Paul said it may be better not to marry (1 Cor. 17:32) "He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord..."

Nevertheless, Bossylee, please do not stereotype Nuns. Ask any Christian women if they are "born again."

They will respond "YES." Next, ask them [or Muslim in a borka] if they are happy. The answer will not be a responsive and rapid yes--they will stammer a little while thinking they better say YES or shame God.

The truth is, has anyone really ever been able to make a woman happppppy?

Blessings and AGAPE love, OneWay

Why were the Pharisees so hateful of Jesus? Why are atheists so full of fear, doubts about the future of their lives and this planet, and often so rude, obnoxious and dare mean? Why are the religions just full of hateful, unkind, people like the nuns you mentioned?
Aren't many of them suppose to be religious and read their Bibles everyday? The monks in the monasteries, study all the time in the word, and yet you can find rude and even hateful behavior there as well!
Christ say to His disciples and any true followers that would come after them, as well as to Nicodemus that you MUST BE BORN AGAIN!!! Born of the water and of the Holy Spirit, to be saved!! The nuns you mentioned and the others mentioned here by me, were either having a bad day spiritually, or weren't SAVED and filled with the Holy Spirit in the first place! They need to get 'born-again' and then their attitude will change, and you will see the 'fruits of the Spirit' of God manisfest itself in them!!!
We can not walk the walk of faith in Jesus Christ by ourselves. It is often very hard to, take up our cross and follow after Him. We need the help of the Holy Spirit to empower for this task.
How do we get this 'power' from the Holy Spirit?
According to the New Testament, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience sent by Jesus Christ to us His followers. As recorded in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus describes it as "the Promise of the Father", through which believers in Jesus Christ receive "Power from on high" (Luke 24:49). According to the Book of Acts, Jesus further referred to the 'Baptism in the Holy Spirit' as an experience through which His disciples would "receive Power, after that the Holy Ghost [was] come upon [them]" (Acts 1:8).
Among various Christian groups, interpretations differ as to what the Baptism in the Holy Spirit means to practical Christian experience. But basically they tell us we can't possibly walk a true, sinless, Christian life without the infilling of the Holy Spirit to help us every single day!

What about the one in the Sound of Music?

Also Karen Armstrong, author of A Short History of Myth, a very useful read.

I've also read a life story of one who became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, although she didn't particularly like her life at the convent.

The thing about time is that it's not supposed to be so regimented. The apostle James says that we are but a mist. We do not know what tomorrow will bring.

There were some at my high school who liked time regulation, because I think they had a nice little business running out of it. They were connected to some big time crooks. I don't know what the business was - probably collecting royalties off the chastity movement.

Nuns aren't bitter. I've met several, and they are always the nicest people in the world. I've never met an angry or upset nun. You can't believe everything in movies.

Maybe because you haven't looked hard enough, example, Mother Theresa of Calcutta, St. Therese de Liseuex, St. Theresa de Avila, St. Clair of Assisi, and so on. We have many blessed nuns, most of them are, just get to know them on a personal basis before rushing to judgement.
God bless and thanks for the opportunity to spread the Gospel.
