Where did horoscopes originate?

The purpose of a horoscope is to gain insight into a person’s character and foretell the future. The basic belief of astrology is that planets and stars exert an influence upon our lives. Those with special knowledge—astrologers—can predict events in a person’s life. It is distressing that most major newspapers have a horoscope column, and even more distressing that many Christians read their horoscopes.

The Bible expressly forbids divination, sorcery, and hidden arts (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). God’s people are to heed God only (Deuteronomy 18:15). Any other source of guidance, information, or revelation is to be rejected outright. See also Acts 16:16-18. The Bible points to Jesus Christ as the only proper focus of faith (Acts 4:12; Hebrews 12:2). Our trust is in God alone, and we know that He will direct our paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). Faith in anything besides God is misplaced.

Astrology, then, opposes biblical teaching in at least two ways: it advocates faith in something besides God, and it is a form of divination. We cannot determine God's will for our lives through horoscopes. As Christians, we are to read the Bible and pray to God in order to gain wisdom and guidance. A Christian consulting a horoscope is a violation of God's means of communicating with His children. We strongly believe that horoscopes should be rejected by Christians.

The three wise men that brought Jesus gifts were Astrologers. They wrote horoscopes.

Astrology goes way, way back.

The most ancient text I ever saw was from something like 20 AD and it read like a current book on astrology and then some.

Todays texts, for example, call Scorpios very amorous. That ancient text called them down right lustful.

It is said the Pryamids in both Egypt and Mexico were designed as Astrological temples and observatories.

The first algorithms to predict the return of planets (not an easy thing to do, go try it sometimes, you have to understand motion body problems) were done by Astrologers.

Astrologers probably played a significant part in the development of higher math. They certainly helped with things like Logarithms.

If we were to erase them from history, we'd probably be using Roman Numerals today, would not have a Zero (that came from a Persian, probably an Astrologer) or negative numbers and would probably not have Gemoetry and Trig or it would be severly lacking because neither the Greeks nor the Romans were deep thinkers in terms of numbers.

It was the Persians (probably for Astrological reasons in math) that devised the number system used to make Calculus possible.

Try doing Calculus with Roman Numerals. See where that gets you.

Hath not God said: Thou shalt NOT have any other gods before ME? When we follow after such as horoscopes, we place our TRUST in the things of this world, and the Devil the great deceiver is behind this behavior!!!
True Christians may read a daily horoscope just for laughs, but they would NEVER believe in what is stated there, for the 'demons of hell' will be sure to see to it that you continue believing, by actually having the ability to make certain 'things' happen the way it states in the horoscope!!!
Yes, they have the power to trick you into believing false teachings and the doctrines of men, and cause you to seek after every 'wind' of doctrine in place of the true and Holy Word of God in the Bible!!! Christian believe in and follow on a daily basis, the teachings to LIVE BY in the Bible, and NOT some Devil's trick!

I read horoscopes... and I'm a Christian... Don't believe in horoscopes though... Stars show us what has passed, not what's in the future! And they're always wrong about me!

I don't know where horoscopes originated, but it says in the bible not to use any sort of witchcraft such as "reading stars". So that's why christians don't read them. or at least REAL christians don't.

In astrology, a horoscope is a chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets, the astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. The word "horoscope" is derived from Greek words meaning "a look at the hours" (horoskopos, pl. horoskopoi, or "marker(s) of the hour.") Other commonly used names for the horoscope in English include astrological chart, astro-chart, celestial map, sky-map, star-chart, cosmogram, vitasphere, radical chart, radix, chart wheel, or simply chart, among others. It is used as a method of divination regarding events relating to the point in time it represents and forms the basis of the horoscopic traditions of astrology.

In common usage, horoscope often refers to an astrologer's interpretation, usually through a system known as sun sign astrology. In particular, many newspapers and magazines carry horoscope columns based on celestial influences in relation to the placement of the Sun in the zodiac on the day of a person's birth, identifying the person's sun sign.

Today, many people dabble in the mystical, occultic arts. Is there anything wrong with being involved in these practices? Yes, the Bible takes a clear position on this subject, strongly denouncing these practices. God created us and therefore owns us. He has a right to set the rules for our lives. Gods Word indicates that these practices are part of Satan's strategy of evil tricks and deception, designed to lead us astray. Satan and his demons are real beings set on our destruction. Christians are warned to "put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
