Iron is usually mined a an oxide (haematite Fe2O3) and then smeltered. Smelting will reduce the Fe3+ to Fe in an exothermic reaction. Coke (coal) is added to allow for the oxygen to combine and form CO2. CO2 is released and the raw iron falls to the bottom of the smelter where it is drawn (tapped) off.
