I have a calico cat who is almost 2 years old. I took her to the vet when I first got her at age 8 weeks without any serious problems. She didn't like it, but most cats don't. She was spayed and the vet commented that she was a little aggressive. I attempted to take her to the vet shortly after she turned a year old. The vet could not handle her at all. It got to the point where my cat was hissing/"growling" and trying to scratch and bite the vet, her assistant and ME! The vet prescribed xanax for my kitty and I made another appointment. I could not get her to take the pill, even when I crushed it up and put in on tuna and canned cat food. She is really the calmest, sweetest cat at home and she is very friendly to everyone that comes into my house. I'm expecting a baby in August and I would really feel better if my cat were up to date on her shots. She doesn't go outside (ever) but I want to be safe. Are there vets that make house calls for cats? And how do I find one?

I also have a 9 month old puppy who does go outside. The cat and dog "play" together daily.

The strange sights and smells and even the carrier and car ride can really upset cats alot more then it does dogs. There are vet that make house calls, look in the Yellow Pages and see what you can find. If you can not find any, the call your regular vet and see if he/she will make a housecall for an extra charge.
BUT, if your cat does not go outside, you have no other pets that go out, then you are pretty safe in skipping a few years between visits.
Even if the vet comes to your house, he/she will carry smells that will upset your cat. Your best bet is to take the cat, warn the staff and they will make arrangments to deal with it. They are trained for these situations and know how to deal with it without putting themselves, you, and your cat in danger.
Hope this helps.

Yes, most vets will offer home visits - not cheap tho. We charge £80 just for the visit, to cover the cost of losing a vet from the surgery.

Also it's not ideal as there are only so many things the vet can bring with him to treat the animal - tho for vaccinations obviously it's ideal, if you don't mind forking out!

Phone around and find out how much vets charge for house calls. If you're lucky, you'll find one that lets nurses do vaccinations - it's cheaper to send a nurse out.

There are several Vets in my area, but only one of them will make house calls.
Granted the house calls are made for farm animals like cows and horses.
I would imagine if you can find a Vet that works with farm and companion animals they'd more than likely be willing to come to the house to see your cat, they'll probably charge you a fee for coming out but if the cat is that aggressive it's worth it.

Your vet may be able to give you a reference, or perhaps the local animal shelter can help you out. Sometimes they are listed under Vets on Wheels or Traveling Vet Services.

They will probably charge a little more, but it sounds like it would be worth it for you.

Good luck with the new baby too!

Xanax for your cat wow. Is your vet trying to turn your cat into a pill addict!

Yes, where I live there are two. One is completely mobile. She only goes to people's houses. The other does both.

I haven't checked out their prices, but I'm sure they are higher for them having to make the trip, especially with the gas prices these days!!
