I am in the military, just moved from Ca. to Ga and my Ca registration is due. This renewal happens to be the bi-annual requiring a smog test which my car can pass no problem.

I can keep my Ca. registration here in Ga just by an online address change and sending in the renewal with smog test. Thats where I am concerned. Will Ca allow the standards of a Georgia smog test in the renewal?

CA. is very lenient to military members and should waive the Smog Cert. Req. untill you return to CA.

I would recommend changing it to Georgia plates at this time unless you are only there for basic training. The rates are usually lower and they will allow for you to renew by mail without any problems. I know my ex kept his Washington plates for that same reason. He was able to renew even when he was on a 18 month tour. As far as California, they will not accept the pass or fail from Georgia, it would have to accompany all of the stats that go with it. You can call them at (800) 777-0133 or check out their website at www.dmv.org and click on the picture of california. Hope this helps

Good question. I suggest that you call the Ca. DMV or register your car in GA. with your address there..
