5 hours a day is not even to much your dog likes alone time for napping or whatever just like we do. Most dogs are alone far more than you are planning to be away. Sounds to me like you will make a perfect dog owner.

Getting an older dog from a shelter would be a good idea. Older dogs are past the chewing stage so you wouldn't have to worry about what they may bring back into the house from the yard. Plus, you could get a dog that's already housebroken and/or doggy door trained. Just give him/her some toys and it'll be fine.

5 hours 2 days a week will be fine! The dog will most likely sleep, anyway.
I would, however, suggest getting a crate and crating him for this time period. Sometimes it can be unsafe to leave a dog to it's own devices. Along that same vain, it's great that you have a doggie door, but if you're going to let your pet in the backyard unsupervised, make sure your fence is VERY secure and he can't jump/climb over it or dig under it!
Best of luck to you!!

Look at it this way, especially if you get a rescued dog, they would be sitting in a dog pound all day or getting the big needle. Also after 20 mins dogs lose concept of time so thye really dont realize how long you are gone. most families work, it doesn't mean you shouldnt give a dog a home that desperately needs one. After all what better life than to stay home arelaz all day while somoene else goes and makes the money to feed you? wouldnt we all love that?

That doesn't seem too bad as long as you don't get a puppy. I suggest adopting an older dog from the SPCA, one that is already trained and housebroken. After reading a few of your other questions, if you do get a dog, an older one would be the best. Considering you are away at school for so long, consider an adult and maybe a senior to keep each other company.

Five hours two days a week is certainly a reasonable time for a dog to be left alone. HOWEVER, I would certainly use a crate for the dog while you are away. Unsupervised pets can cause an amazing amount of damage not to mention injure themselves. Better to be safe than sorry.

I don't think this is an unreasonable amount of time for an adult dog to be alone. Just make sure he lots of toys to occupy himself on those days. If you get a puppy, 5 hours is too long and he can't be outside by himself - you would want to get a friend or neighbor to come after about 3 hours and let him out of his crate to go potty (assuming you would crate train him).
