Hi Zoe,

This is a common fear with many people, so don't feel you are the only one and don't beat yourself up about it. I get the feeling perhaps you haven't flown before or in a very long time and it is kind of hard to give you advice because you don't actually identify what it is about flying that scares you.

Growing up, I used to state that i would never fly. I was and am still afraid of heights, but it wasn't until I actually flew that I realised that being on the plane is so much different than you think. you look around and see people looking so relaxed and that usually helps a lot and it kinda feels like your on a bus at times..I am actually flying next week and am looking forward to the experience. Everyone gets nerves, especially if they are a first time flyer, however you do sound extremely anxious if you are having night terrors.

If you live in the uk there is tablets called "travel calm"..you get them in boots chemist and they are apprx £2.50...they make you feel abit more relaxed, if not actually drowsey and could help....if not see yoru doctor about something stronger.

Look up breathing exercises on the internet and ways of calming yourself down...tell yourself everytime you think about it "it's nothing to worry about, milliions of people fly every day of the week..I can do this"....and you can!

Another tip is to take your walkman/mp3/ipod with you. You can't use it during take or or landing but for the part inbetween it may help you to relax!

If you drink you could take a small glass of something (but be careful not to mix it with medication)...and do not drink too much as it will go to your head quickly when flying.

With some airlines such as Easyjet, if you mention at check in that you are a very nervoius flyer sometimes they cnan make a note of this and get you onto the plane first and make the cabin crew aware so that they can help put your mind at ease....if this sounds comforting why not contact the airline you are flying with.

I was frightened thinking of flying when I hadn't been before, but once you do it once you will feel great and you will feel like the whole world is yours to explore because you will have conqured your fear....and you can do this..theres nothing to it!

Enjoy your holiday!

x

i used to be but ive been that many times now its not so bad. I think what helped me was seeing everyone else boarding and not having a care in the world, i just thought if over 150 people are relaxed about it it cant be that bad and its not. The worst is the take off and landing but thats over quickly once your up there its easyier to relax as you dont even realise you are moving. Having a meal on the plane also helps as it takes your mind off things. Think about what you are going to do when you get there, the fun you will have the things you will see. I went to prague last november and came back with loads of nice new clothes

Last year I flew for the first time - I'm 41!! Both of my children and myself were terrified of flying. We decided it would be worth the money (about £200 each) to go on the Virgin Atlantic Fear of Flying course, which was held at a hotel near Gatwick. Of the 150 people on the day long course only one would not get on the plane for the 45 minute flight at the end of the day. It was well worth the money - they go through all aspects of flying and answer all your questions and your worries. I really would recommend it to anyone too scared to fly. Good luck. x

I'm absolutely petrified of flying-and usually spend the entire 2 weeks before I fly with my head stuck down a toilet!!! The best things I've found are to make sure I don't watch the news etc for a while (plane crash reports don't help!!) and to take mild sedatives!! I'm going away later this year to Florida which is a 9hr flight so I'm already starting.

I'm scared of flying but am doing it for the first time in 20 odd years this October so can fully sympathise with you. My brother went to the doctors who gave him something for the nerves. But flying is one of the safest forms of transport and after he had flown to Southern France he realised it was actually not that bad...

i'm unquestionably terrified of flying. although, this is the only logical thank you to get someplace a ways away. i presently went to Jamaica from California, it took 30 mg. of Valium and one mixed drink on the 2d flight. It become a three flight holiday. on the 2d flight we hit turbulance and that i merely approximately had a panic attack. It become close. So sure, the respond is sure. no longer because of the fact of 9/11, I even have continuously had this worry.

Ive heard that you can get a calming tablet or something from chemists such as Boots (if you're in England). Just tell them your fear and they can prescrive something for you before you fly off.
Personally I hate flying, so Good Luck and have a nice time!!!

Yeh I havent flown anywhere since Sept 11... (not that I've needed to) A friend of mine is really scared of it too, but has to travel alot for work. Go see your doctor about (mild) sedatives. Explain your fear/anxierty about it. I've heard that its much safer that any other mode of transport though.

Lots of people have problems flying. WHat you need to do is maybe get a valium for the flight. I have friends who just take one and wake up at their destination.

Statistically air travel is one of the safest modes of transport. You are more likely to get knocked over by a car.
