ummm.... u phrased the question really broad based ....... like what do u mean is insulin better ?? for a type 1 or type 2 Dm.. and if it's for type 2 .. why is ur sugar not controlled .. ???

but anywayz i will give u a basic outlook ... type 1 dm that is if u were diagnosed very young u have no options other than insulin ....

if ur type 2 then u have been put on insulin becuz ur sugar level is very high .... with proper diet control and exercise u could bring down ur sugar levels when ur MD can switch u over to OHA ( oral hypoglycemic agents )

and furthermore there are different types of insulin like u can divide them from where u get it ( eg : porcine insulin is got from pigs ) or by the duration of action ( eg : ultralente acts pretty fast and lasts for short time ) or by the mode in which u give ( nowadays they have painless delivery system )

phew !! and to add insulin can also be given for people without DM ... for example for hyperkalemia ( increased pottasium ) but that is usually in a ICU setup .... or u could have taken it for body building in which case i would strictly warn u against it

Not for type I diabetics.

The thing about insulin is that it's the only thing that does exactly what insulin does. Other medications work in different ways, and they only work if the person is already producing insulin. If they can't, they need to inject it because no amount of pills will work.

Very obese persons are insulin resistant. For them Biguanides are better.
