I never thought of this question.

I guess I'd define it as a public ceremony where you show the world you are in a committed relationship.

It's a ceremony where your family and friends can rejoice with you over your commitment to your partner. They also get to see you verbalize your commitment.

The church considers it also a ceremony where the church blesses your commitment to each other.

It is a recognition of the Christian belief that marriage was instituted by God, and is a celebration of the relationship between a man and a woman. It's a relationship that mirrors the love that Christ has for the Church, and an illustration of how our God loves us.
