I think they both go together like two sides of a coin, to be able to empathise with someone in pain to the point of being compassionate would require an understanding (be it vague) of their pain. Every human being is bound to experience some kind of pain at some point in their life and one of the positive things about this is we can become better people as a result and help other people who find themselves in similar situations.

Bingo!!! You cannot know yourself as something unless you are not...it is the grand duality of life here...if there was not up, then what would be down? If you were not hot, how would you know cold? If you were a candle amidst a million other candles, how would you experience yourself to be light unless you stepped into a darkness? See? Keep thinking...always a good thing!

you don't have to feel the pain to feel compassion its just there ....sympathy to what others are suffering trying to put how one would feel in their place and its not nice so compassion is heartfelt not a silly emotion but a sharing of grieve maybe for a wrong .. heartfelt .... not how many would put it ...... its so hard to explain without appearing a cretin just a human thing maybe just caring

i don't think you can know compassion without first knowing pain, how can you sympathize with someone unless you truly know what they are going through, yes you can sit and talk but you can't understand unless you have been there yourself.

2 Nephi 2:11 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first-born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility.
