We can know compassion through Empathy....by feeling our own heart, and understanding that the cause n circumstances of suffering may be different for each person, but that person's hurt or depression, etc. over there is the same as my hurt, depression, etc.

Many people feel pain(everyone has felt it to some degree), but knowing pain is not necessarily a means to feel or know compassion. Some people feel a lot of pain in their lives, but they aren't compassionate from having experienced it.

It's how we relate to pain...the empathy we have for our own pain, and for everyone else's pain, that is what brings compassion.

You can, if you have a heart i.e., you are sensitive to the needs of people other than you.
Knowing pain ourselves helps us to relate with the suffering of others as in we are able to actually step into their shoes and know where exactly the shoe is pinching & what is the magnitude. But then does this gurantee that we will be compassionate towards them. Having suffered ourselves & knowing the gravity, we may also have an attitude that the 'Pain' is not a big deal & since we were able to handle it, even others can.
A right attitude & sensitivity is the recipe for compassion. Pain is just another garnish, which has the ability to enhance or dominate 'compassion'.

Compassion is a special kind of love. It requires the knowledge of pain and the removal of pain when you do something for the one that you love. Thus, without knowing the pain, it is impossible to feel compassion for another.

This is also why there exists both Law and Gospel.

We can know compassion by learning from the world around us. People all over the world suffer on a daily basis. We can learn compassion from seeing them and helping those that require help. People who can learn and know compassion without suffering themselves are very fortunate.

Not 'knowing' Compassion is the lack of empathy. Sometimes it is awaken within a person that has experienced pain.

I once heard this story over the radio. A father wrote to a radio station once, that his 3 year-old boy actually cried and thugged his dad's hand, urging him to help this old man he came acrossed in a crowded market. This old man's hand was so shaky due to his illness, probably parkinson disease, that he couldn't even manage his cup of coffee, that he was trying very hard to drink. The little boy, who probably hasn't experience any kind of pain in his life before, shows extreme compassion, and I felt so ashame of myself. The compassion is definitely in us, but we are sometimes too engrossed in our daily life and being busy, we failed to notice the sad life movie that is really happening around us. And sometimes, we took it for granted that that's life.

Speaking as someone who has known pain I don't think suffering automatically endows anyone with virtue. It gives one a different perspective on life and can lead to personal growth but it's an opportunity that people may or may not utilise. It could just as easily cause one to become cynical and embittered.

'Pain 'and 'compassion' are inseparable--although they seem to be like two words.
