my son is 12 and my daughter is 9. over the last 2 months or so their attitude has changed drastically! No changes in the household at all...everything is pretty much the same. They are still reasonably happy, but they seem to be finding any reason possible to be lazy, find trouble, talk back, give attitude, and generally drive me nuts! Love them dearly but I have no clue as to why the sudden change....and in both of them! Help?

It's called Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) Narcissists will say ANYTHING, they will trash anyone in their own self-justification, and then they will expect the immediate restoration of the status quo. They will attack you (sometimes physically) and spew a load of bile, insult, abuse, contempt, threats, etc., and then -- well, it's kind of like they had indigestion and the vicious tirade worked like a burp: "There. Now I feel better. Where were we?" They feel better, so they expect you to feel better, too. They will say you are nothing, worthless, and turn around immediately and say that they love you. When you object to this kind of treatment, they will say, "You just have to accept me the way I am. (God made me this way, so God loves me even if you are too stupid to understand how special I am.)" The most telling thing that narcissists do is contradict themselves. They will do this virtually in the same sentence, without even stopping to take a breath. It can be trivial (e.g., about what they want for lunch) or it can be serious (e.g., about whether or not they love you). When you ask them which one they mean, they'll deny ever saying the first one, though it may literally have been only seconds since they said it -- really, how could you think they'd ever have said that? You need to have your head examined! They will contradict FACTS. They will lie to you about things that you did together. They will misquote you to yourself. If you disagree with them, they'll say you're lying, making stuff up, or are crazy.

Your 12 year old is possibly trying to act like others in her class that act out, I know coz Im a 14 year old, and beliveve me you see this kinda stuff everyday in school. People trying to be like the person going against the teacher. Your 9 year old probably looks up to your 14 year old so is trying to act like her. Should pass if it doesnt just talk to them. Or at worse cut down pocket money or something dramatic like that [=

Did something happen lately at home or school? Sit them down one at a time and ask if anything has happened that you need to know about, i know at that age they go threw allot of peer pressure etc.. at school. And no child is a perfect angel, it is part of being a kid. Maybe go to a counselor or something. All kids go threw stages, but it sounds like something is happening at home or in school. Good luck

The younger one copies the older one..and the older one needs to be shown the behaviour is unacceptable..forget the therapy stuff, and lay down some rules..if he don't like that--there are police officers who can come to your house, and have a "talk" with him...

You can go to their schools and ask their teachers if there were any changes..

You can also try to discipline them..WITHOUT beating...

Meanwhile, you can go for therapy or try catching their attention.

Spend time with them. You and your husband might not be spending time with them and you can't see it.
