I bought a house and the cabinets are unattractive. I saw at Lowes about "refacing"??? I also saw a look called the "casual kitchen" where there are no doors and the cabinets are painted. What do you think would be best?

Refacing is still on the expensive side at least I think so. Try painting the cupboards and replacing the existing hardware. This can really brighten up a room and make existing cupboards work until you are able to replace them.

The casual kitchen look does work if you are a very organized and neat person since all the cupboards are open for everyone to see. If you are not then I would think painting the doors may be the best answer.

I'd recommend going with getting your cabinets refaced. That is probably the cheapest.

If you take the doors off, that means that everything in your cabinets will have to look totally neat for the cabinets not to look a mess. And to be honest that is a feat that many neat freaks can't accomplish.

What they do when they reface your cabinets is they pull off the fronts of them, put new doors on them and they put a new front on your cabinets and probably a laminate over the sides that you can see. Basically it makes the outside of your old cabinets look like new. The guts and insides of them are basically still the same.

Well, to save money, you can try doing both the cabinets and countertops. Think about refacing cabinets and doing the countertop. Get the free estimates contractors or even your local Home Depot give out. This will be a lot cheaper than gutting your kitchen and remodeling it.

Sand them down and and paint them whatever color you want. Put some cool hardware on them and they will look great. Taking the doors off, might look neat at first, but after a while, everything will get dusty and you have to keep everything really neat to do this, or it looks like an unfinished kitchen.

I'm not experienced in this area but I have a suggestion I'd like to make! You could simply change the handles of your cabinets and it gives a different look already!

This is my opinion to your additional caption: I usually like to "hide" my storage areas so I think myself, I would keep the doors and I can be a clumsy person so I wouldn't want to knock anything over!

Best wishes.

i agree with re painting the cabinets.
BUT
only way for it to look good is to spray them in a 2-pack enamel.
there are contractors out there that specialize in this and will make ur kitchen look brand new
