They are both tropical plants. They both grow wild and both are grown in cultivation commercially.
Well Sophie, I finally figured it out and your mum was right, I would have never figured it out. What orchids and avocados have in common are testicles. No, it's not a joke. I'll give you references.
"Orchids" comes from the word "Orchis", meaning testicles. .
"Avocados, the first food I've researched that has appeared to have been named after testicles."
