The lens closer to the object (called objective lens) produces an inverted and magnified image, which is further magnified by the eyepiece into a virtual image. However, when the image is projected on the screen, the image is real and is upright with respect to the original image since it is inverted twice.

They don't. 2 lenses will give an upright image. One lens will give an inverted image.
