The Earth's magnetic field changes by itself. There are many scientists who believe the magnetism simply turns itself off at some point and then turns itself back on in a "reversed" position. The poles switch positions and possibly even restart in entirely different locations. It happens about every 200,000 to 250,000 years.

The earth's magnetic field is caused by motion of the molten metallic interior. As the currents shift around due to random motion and thermal currents, the magnetic field drifts around.

The Earth's magnetic field is a dynamic system, not a static system. Changes in it are seen throughout the Earth's history. There is no easy explanation and anyone who could answer your question would probably win a Nobel Prize in Physics.
