Unfortunately, in order for a user to be able to rate answers within Yahoo! Answers, they need to get to Level 2.
I have noticed that this leads a lot of users to try and answer as many questions as they can in a short period of time to build up enough points to get to Level 2. In my opinion, this encourages users to leave short, snappy, answers (sometimes containing irrelavent content) rather than meaningful, well-thought out, useful answers.
Other people on this site, I would imagine, would want to boost their own personal ego by having a high points balance; this is probably another reason why some users like to leave very short answers to questions asked here on Yahoo! Answers.
I must say, also, that I totally agree with your comments regarding the asking of some very childish and shallow questions by others here. One should bear in mind that there are a lot of minors who frequent this site, and use it as a form of entertainment, so I always expected that silly questions would be something to expect from Yahoo! Answers.
Trust me, there is some very good content to be found here on Yahoo! Answers. I find that the questions asked by "Officials" (e.g. Barack Obama) usually have well-constructed, meaningful, in-depth answers within their answer thread. (e.g. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070321123705AAUBCyH ).

Goodman; you're right. But think about it.... you aren't dealing with just people here. You are dealing with the public, and that is a different animal all together. As a result a thousand different men and women are going to be reading what you have to ask; then the majority will answer with a quip, and gain another two points.
Others will answer with a short reply believing it is sufficient, and then there are the poor ones who are just plain mean.
This isn't a cafe on the university grounds Goodman. There are no face to face conversations, no immediacy of voice inflection, nor body language. Just keys on board and the screen before the eyes.
So with that you are not going to get anything above the common denominator.
Myself I have answered hundreds of questions. I've only asked two. Both questions I've asked were repeated in two different categories to insure a proper and intelligent answer. I got them. (intelligent answers that is) Those questions were asked only after I've exhausted all other avenues I could think of.
This is probably why you aren't getting a plethora of intelligent responses. From the general public I don't think we can expect that. I believe we have to go through a lot of crap to get the proper answer.
I hope this helps you in your dilemma.

Because most questions are asked rhetorically or sarcastically. Also, they have been ridiculed for honest answers after giving them.Furthermore, have you ever met anyone who doesn't think they are right all of the time and everyone else is beneath them?I still like the question you raised but fail to see why it would be posted on the political portion of y/a.

That's just the way things are. Its far easier to answer alot of questions with short answers than long ones.
The people who write quality answers tend to get the majority of the Best Answers. Its probably easier to run up points by spamming, but you get further promoting your ideas if you write quality answers.

That's because a lot of the users ARE children, or uneducated. This is a cross-section of anyone in the world who has access to the internet. There's no screening mechanism so you're getting the raw demographics.

Participants in this forum tend to like short answers but meanigful and complete. Answer like a mini-skirt, short enough to cover the essentials.

People don't want to read long answers. They are lazy. Also, the people that answer questions want their two points and the quicker they get them, the better.
