The Ghoul.
Scary to watch when you are a kid, which we were back when it was shown.
John Hurt was a young actor then and he played the role of the 'not quite right' handyman very well.
The actual Ghoul wasn't all that scary, but because you didn't see him until the end, the suspense he created throughout the movie was excellent.
After the movie we couldn't walk underneath the loft opening without looking up and checking that The Ghoul wasn't peeping through.

There was a few good ones in the 80's like the Changeling, the Bogeyman, Halloween, but my favourite is an old Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing one called Dracula has risen from the grave.

First of all I'm vaguely insulted..... "Old as in the 80's or earlier......." sigh!!!
That being said... there are some classics ...
Last House on the left
Black Christmas
The Hills have Eyes
The Evil Dead
Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Night of the Living Dead.
I think it was revolutionary for it's time. They showed Zombies committing acts of canibalism on film in the 1960's!!! Things didn't get that explicit back then. It was shocking for that time period.
I also liked the whole concept of how the story focused on a handful of people and their experience during this crisis. They could have shown world-wide response. Instead, they chose to focus in on a few characters in an old house by a cemetary.
I also liked the 1989 remake.

The Haunting, soooo much better than the remake.
No scary monsters or dodgy special effects but a great story making a great movie.
Poltergeist 1 and American Werewolf in London, definitely not Paris, also deserve a mention.

My absolute, all-time favorite is 'The Birds' starring Tippi Hedren (Alfred Hitchcock).
The sense of foreboding in that early scene where she's sitting on a bench and you see progressively more black crows surround her is just stultifying!
That movie scared me so badly, I've never been able to watch other scary movies!
