with wear, the fabric seems to form small bobbles of wool on its surface and I would like to restore it to be smoother to the look and the feel; any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

You can get a special sweater-shaver from some department stores or fabric stores. They work like miniature beard clippers to remove the balls of lint. If you can't find any, the other option is hand picking them off. This can be done by a child if you've got a willing one.

There is such a thing called a sweater shaver, or something like that. My mom has 2 of them. Basically its a battery powered razor, like an electric razor a guy would use to shave his face, but it has large holes to snip off the lumps on sweaters and other fabrics that get those lumps. Check *-Mart.

They sell sweater de-fuzzers at most stores. A drugstore would be the best option. They pretty much shave off all the little fuzzies that form on different clothing. (I especially hate it after I wash something dark and when it comes out of the dryer it has little white fuzz balls on it!) They run on batteries (Mostly AA) so are portable when you're traveling. They're inexpensive as well.

They make sweater shavers. They are like a electric shaver and work the same way. They will remove the clumps of wool that cling to the sweater and make it look ugly.

Don't waste your money on lint shavers. A normal razor will do just fine, shave it as you would your legs. Be careful not to snag it though!
