Can someone please explain what Homecomming is all about in the High school year.... I'm from the UK - so I don't know much about it - apart from what the movies portray it as.
What's the purpose of homecomming?
At what point in the school year do you have it?
What is the point of a homecomming Queen and King? And how do you become the homecomming Queen/ King?
And what are the traditions associated with homecomming?

It is a traditional celebration when previous pupils of the school are welcomed back as visitors. It is a little like British "Open Days" but takes place in early autumn, so in the first school term.
The King and Queen selection is very much like the choosing of an English "May Queen" or "Carnival Queen" in UK, and usually a pupil who has distinguished himself or herself one way or the other gets the title.
Traditions and activities vary widely from school to school. There may be a match, or games, a grand ball , a "dressing up " or themed "tag" day, intrumental performances, Majorettes parade, etc...

PS: If you type "Homecoming in High schools" on websearch, there are several posts telling you what the celebrations are in a variety of schools.

Wise Owl is correct. The only problem with Homecoming is virtually no Alumni ever attend.I live in a fairly small city near Chicago. My wife and I went to the local high school as did our kids. If we showed up at Homecoming and my daughter or son were there, they'd die of embarrassment. I doubt my wife and I would like the music and probably couldn't dance to it anyhow. I always threatened to go, since it was for us Alumni. My kids knew I wasn't that cruel.
