Plain and Simple: We wanted to beat the Russians. They beat us to space, the least we could do was make it to the moon.
If it was proven false then the Russians could just rub our faces in it.
A major lie like that would kill, the US public image.

Apollo 11 13 and 15 put Retroreflectors (a type of reflective device that sends light back to where it came from)
these are being used to measure the distance between the moon and the earth. A pulse of light is sent to the moon and the time it takes to bounce back from these retroreflectors is measured. http://www.cnn.com/TECH/space/9907/21/apollo.experiment/
Why do people want to disbelieve things like the moon landings. It was probably the greatest achievement in the history of mankind since we invented the wheel and a historic moment like that should give hope that we can achieve much more.

Because it is the act of humans going to another celestial body for the first time. It is an achievement, far greater than any other in history, because it combined engineering, scientific and organisational skills of a vast army of people.
Columbus just sailed in a standard boat, Hillary and Tensing climbed Everest using shop bought equipment.
Perhaps it is like the great pyramids, really an exercise in vanity, a symbol of a society that is more interested in another world than making this one better.
Mind you, in the same year the Internet was started, with much less fanfare and obviously far more impact.

Because the moon landings were an amazing triumf over what humanity is capable of. Humans sacrificed their lives to go there. To say that doesn´t matter is to say that nothing matters.

It does make difference. A scientific advancement does not tell its benefits immediately. For example, a scientist (voltas I think) while dissecting a frog found that when he touched copper and iron needles together, the frog jumped. This led to invention of electric battery.
When Einstine wrote E=MC^2 , its applications were unknown. Now it is used fur nuclear bomb to nuclear power stations etc.
Moving a step ahead may open many areas of further knowledge and applications. For example, rare metals - you know the periodic table is yet incomplete.

because for people who are really into astronomy and been studying space all throughout they're life, it really matters... only few people have the opportunities to land on the moon and study the moon... so it's really a great achievement....

It matters to no one but you..the individual..what we choose to believe without hard evidence is a matter of awareness..
be calm within yourself and focus your thoughts on your feelings..whether you believe or not is irrelevant..how do you feel about it?
I personally believe we have achieved this but what is relayed back to us is conjecture...distorted and spiritualy hurtful....
the truth is hard to swallow at best so take heart in what you want to believe and you will find that it gets you through the night :)

Because eventually we will outgrow this world, and want to go to Mars, to pollute that. Getting to the Moon showed that we had the capability to do so.

We were told that we did, and we don't want our government lying to us...
Also, it was really mans finest hour, and it would be TERRIBLE if it was all hoaxed. That said, i truly believe that we DID land on the moon.

Because they said they did... So we expect them to be telling the truth instead of making us look like idiots..
Plus it marks the step in final frontier (The exploration of other worlds)
