Yes. There are exceptions; such as being sick, taking care of someone, etc. But yes, the Catholic church says it IS a mortal sin. You can attend Saturday evening mass though- it can be substituted for sunday.

Religion is a personal and individual thing. Where in the Ten Commandments does it say "Thous must attend Weekly Church services"? Mortal sins are sins against the Ten Commandments. I rarely go to Church. God is in my heart and not in a building. If anyone says that to be a good Christian, you must go to this building weekly to hear a man in robes lecture for about an hour and pay him 10% of what you make, that person is not a true follower of GOD , but a follower of the Church. What is the difference? You might ask. The difference is GOD is not a building and is not made up of a bunch of men in robes, but the Church is a series of buildings and men in robes who want to tell you what you are to do in life. Why is it that a priest is such a good marriage councelor? Priests are not allowed ot marry, so how do they know anything about marriage other than what they are told?

Not reading the Sunday paper in a moral sin.

Missing mass is every Catholic's duty, unless you are 90 years old and a widow in Albania.
