If it starts okay and doesn't put out black smoke, I suspect what you're smelling is oil fumes. Do you have to top up your oil quite frequently?

If so, the old dear's giving its notice, I'm afraid. That's an excellent mileage, good old tranny!

Old diesel Transit's tend to bang and clatter on for years and when they eventually pack in they're REALLY worn out.

Seems quite strange. Is the smell there when the engine is stopped? The reason I ask is because

1. there maybe be something that you picked up or ran over if you know what I mean hiding somewhere within the engine bay or chassis.

2. Is it coming through the ventilation when the fan is stopped and all the outlets are blocked?

Valve seals gone - Piston rings shot to pieces - or both - not worth fixing - you have had a good return on this one if the mileage quoted is accurate - bag it and bin it - cost to repair outweighs a newer one

i am not a diesle tech but it might be time to have the injector timing checked, that would be a good place to start,
