I hate these questions.
You might as well ask how long is a piece of string, given the amount of information you have supplied.

As with all computers you need to look at what you want from this Server and what you want it to do in the future.

If you just want a simple network Server then just buy any PC and get a Server operating system like Win2003.

If you need to have lots of disc space and tape backups then you are looking for a larger machine with the capability to be expanded. This will probably have the unix operating system.

Do your research. No one can give you an answer to your question that will meet your needs.

To rent a server it is maybe $20/month from godaddy.com or other places. if you wanna buy your own maybe it will cost a few hundred dollars. really depends on what you will use the server for.
