Yes, baking soda works. It is what they used in the good old days before Colgate and Crest. It also tastes absolutely awful.

Effective but gross: baking soda, water in to paste and a drop or two of clove, or peppermint or spearmint essential oil and go to town.
Excellent cleanser without fluoride (which is proving to be not so great in toothpaste amounts) and natural alternative to the name brand Crests, and Colgates etc. which believe it or not have a small quantity of sugar in them!

Wet your toothbrush and dip the bristles in baking soda. Brush as usual.
