It has been a few years since I graduated from a university with a degree in Computing.

Recently, I managed to catch up with an old school mate also studying the same course as me. He told me he is now a manager in his company.

May I know under what field in IT is a manager needed? I thought IT careers need people like engineers, administrators or technicians?

IT, and in particular the IT service industry (consultancies), needs managers to (amongst other things) :
Manage IT projects
Manage career development of their teams
Formulate Commercial strategy, define and market offers
Manage client relations
Manage engagements with the client
...etc...

Typically an IT graduate in a consultancy will manage a small team of 2-3 people after a couple of years. Project managers have around 5 years and up.

Managers are needed in just about every field, if not all. Somebody has to watch costs, keep projects on track, and simply lead organizations within a company, government agency, or university.

In small to medium sized organisations, IT managers are employed to manage the whole IT system - make sure the network does what it is meant to do, fix problems with individual PC's, install new software, do updates, etc.
Alternatively, if a lot of IT people are employed in a large company, they need someone to manage them - an IT manager!
