Diffraction, the splitting of light can be observed using a diffraction grating, some naturally occuring like a rainbow or from something as simple as reflecting the light off a CD. Try it and you should see the white light break up into a spectrum.

The correct term of splitting of white light into its constituent seven colours is called "dispersion" of white light.
Diffraction is just another phenomenon involving light.
