By definition, “Metal Foil” is solid metal sheet that has been reduced to a leaf-like thinness by beating or rolling. The first mass-produced metal foil was made from tin (Sn). After Aluminum (Al) refining technology became economical in about 1910, it replaced tin in the metal foil market.

I agree with the previous answers, people call it Tinfoil because they don’t know any better. But, as you said - no excuse! Besides tinfoil, other common names for aluminum foil include Reynolds wrap, Alcoa Wrap, al-foil, alu-foil, and silver paper.

tinfoil was around before aluminum foil and old habits die hard.
