A basic mix would contain

6lb apples
5lb peaches
2lb grapes

Which makes 13lb fruit salad (a third of the total salad weight required)

To scale up, we can multiply each value by 3 to get

18lb apples
15lb peaches
6lb grapes

In a 39lb fruit salad

Looking at the amounts, we get 18lb apples and 6lb grapes in the mix which means 12lb more apples than grapes.

In general, you can scale ratios up (and down) as long as each value is multiplied (or divided) by the same amount.

First,add all the ratios together. 6 + 5 + 2 = 13.Next,divide the number of pounds by 13; 39/13 = 3,which "3" is kind of our magic number.Next,multiply the ratio of apples (6) by three.This would equal 18.You would have 18 pounds of apples.Next,multiply the ratio of grapes (2) by 3,which would equal 6.Subtract the grapes from the apples (18 - 6),which would equal 12.There are twelve more pounds of apples.

39/(6+5+2) = 3
Apples = 6 * 3 = 18 lbs.
Peaches = 5 * 3 = 15 lbs.
Grapes = 2 * 3 = 6 lbs.

***There are 12 lbs more of apples than grapes.

6+5+2 = 13
39/13 = 3
Grape 2 part
Apple 6 part
6 - 2 =4
4 x 3 = 12
12 pounds more

6:5:2 means that there is a total of 13 in the mixture. (sum of 6,5,2)
Now you know that 6/13 is apples and 2/13 is grapes.
Take this fraction of the total of 39 lbs.
So 6/13 of 39 = 18 lbs of apples
and 2/13 of 39 = 6 lbs of grapes
The difference is 12 lbs more of apples.
