Cuba was discovered by Columbus in October 27, 1492. He laid anchors around Camaguey for a night and later docked upstream in Baracoa, Guantanamo (some argue it was in Nuevitas or in Bahia de Humboldt) and claimed cuba by carving a cross out of part of his ship and placing it in a clearing right next to where a river meets the Caribbean sea. The log is said to say that Columbus baptized Cuba with the name of Juana and wrote "This is most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen" He then sailed to La Hispaniola (Now Haiti and DR). Columbus returned to Cuba and confirmed it was an island, he returned 1 more time before dying in 1506 and rumor has it his remains are under the Catedral of Hvana, but that's another story....
