I have an Final essay due tomorrow and I'm confused whether or not the word "discuss" means to talk about our own opinions or just talk about the quotes the professor gave us. She gave us quotes and we had to explain and discuss them (quotes from textbook). Its a philosophy class.

It usually means that you need to give details based on available facts and based on what views have already been given on a subject... the conclusion of the essay is the time to bring your own opinion to the discussion...

Say things like, "according to Dr. So and so, this issue is of utmost importance because of such and such..." "However, John Whatsisface believes that this theory is incorrect because...."

I have NO IDEA what your essay will be on, so it is difficult to help you out... all I can say for sure is, your opinion will be added at the end to tie the essay up... the rest of the essay is about you demonstrating what you learned about the topic at hand...

And YES, incorporate any notes provided by your instructor during class...

I think "Explain and Discuss" is used to Explain a qoute (or quotes), and then Discuss why they are grouped that way / why you thik they are improtant / why they are quotes to know.

Yes, it is your opinion, but not just random out - of - the blue "I like pizza." It's your opinion and backing it up from the text or directly using the quotes.

~~hope that helps~~
