Simply put, the issue was put on the election ballots in many states (in the form of a ban against gay marriage) in order to get out the vote in the conservative population. These people would then vote for the Convservative (Republican) candidate in those areas, helping out those poeple.

While this was a great strategy for the Republicans at the time, it is a limited strategy. The states that passed the ban will not vote on it again, creating a one-time increase in conservative turnout. Now the courts will deal with the bans through lawsuits (Mass for one) where they will be upheld or dismissed. Since this is a one time issue for many states, it is likely not to repeat iself.

If the Supreme Court becomes more liberal over time, they would likely overturn the Federal Marriage Act (not exact title), which empowers states to ignore the gay marriage acts of other states (which basically, without getting into it, forbidden in the Constitution).

Also, it is possible that considering the younger generations' relative acceptance of gays, once they reach voting age (or simply decide to vote), this will reverse over time. History has shown us that in the USA, groups gain rights over time instead of lose them.

Since other countries recognize gay marriages and allow them, the US is no longer the freeist country on Earth.

This by your wording is the problem, most democrats do not want gay marriage, and the democratic party is hurting itself pandering to the fringe groups of society, By and large at least 3/4 of the US is Christain of some or at least some level of faith. And while they may turn the other cheek for the other person to have thier relationship, many would even allow for some level of civil union. But when the line is draw on marriage, most still fall back to thier sunday school days and adam and eve (not adam and adam) As in GA, for example they are Democrat but southern Democrat which have more in comparison with the true republician view point now than the democrat, it is very possible they are nearing a new party to be created, one that will not hunt down the fringe groups for support ( which they never actually get out and vote for much) and go back to supporting the real majority of regular working people. You can't support gays and lesibian, and a southern baptist and make both happy. And there are more moderates that feel betrayed.

Anon issue that was used by the Karl Rove and the Republicans to get out vote in key states. It was designed to avoid the real issues that Republicans did not want to discuss. Like the war in Iraq, health care, education, environment, price of gas. Why deal with issues of importance?

Trying to evade more important issues that they would lose votes on if they took a stance. Smoke and mirrors and getting the public excited over an issue, is like the magician waving his scarf around, (you're looking at that, right?) while the other hand is slipping something into the hat or up his sleeve. Avoidance, purely avoidance of other more important issues.

The average American has deeply repressed issues concerning sexuality. When they think about gay people, it scares them.
Then there is the deeply religious people out there. They think that all homosexuals are going straight to the fiery pits of HELL. And anyone who supports them is going down with them. I keep hoping that one day the Christian fanatics will wake up from their delusions.

Personally, I think that this is a non-issue. How is it any of my business what someone else does in the privacy of their own home?

Because the current resident of the White House made it an issue in order to deflect attention away from the real issues that this nation needs to face.

It concerns a profound, unprecedented change to the fundamental building block of society - marriage. Imposed by the courts on the flimsiest of rationales, circumventing the democratic process.

How could it NOT be an issue?

because gay marriage is one of those narrow issues upon which the neoCONs depend to divide the country. socially insecure Bible believers will vote in droves for a candidate who spews anti-gay rhetoric even if voting for that candidate is actually a vote against their own best interests. bigotry sells well ... especially in the the deep Red South.

Because our society is more accepting of the Gay lifestyle, which brings more and more Gay people out. Which I find great. And a lot of others do too. And we are people with the power of the VOTE.
