The rate isn't that high for first time marriages. That 2 of 3 rate includes second, third, fourth, etc. marriage of people who make one stupid marriage mistake after another.
So why do they divorce? Two reasons: selfishness and/or stupidity (ie. making a lousy choice in the first place then wondering why it fails to work)

I have to say I think rates were low before out of necessity. They may have hated each other and stayed because they needed each other - money for women, cooking and cleaning for men. Also, don't forget about all the kids they had back then. Plus, it was illegal or immoral for a long time to get divorced so who knows how many couples were effectively divorced. It's better now. Relationships are still as hard as always but at least people aren't forced to live in denial or stuck with someone they hate or worse... Modern times...

There are many reasons why marriages fail. I feel they are too numerous to mention, however the ones that immediately come to mind are that perhaps some couples marry when they are too young or lack life experience, or they have unrealstic expectations of marriage.
Perhaps they want different things in their marriage.
Lack of communcation is another big issue.
I feel that pre marriage councelling is a wonderful idea. During these sessions many issues are discussed that perhaps couples would not think about discussing on their own.
If a spouses emotional needs are not being met, and the spouse is not able to communicate this to his/her partner marriage is bound to fail. (same could be said about intimate needs)

Let's see, no sense of committment, quitters, immature, too young, too much work, too many problems, confining, boring. I think that with the no fault divorce it is easier that getting a new suit. Try one on, no qualifications required to marry, if you do not like it, quit and find another or stay single. The institution it used to be is gone. You can have kids whether married or not and when you do, just discard them like our system when their value doesn't get you anything anymore, mostly poor me, poor my women. I used to believe in marriage and the sanctity of raising children and living till your fiftieth wedding anniversary but now I am ashamed to have been associated with the institution. The attitudes have ruined what it took years to build and used to mean something. Now it means nothing. Being it means nothing and they put nothing in it would be just about divorce.

That depends upon the couple. You would have to ask every single divorced couple in America that question to get your answer.

Lack of communication, Infidelity,Financial stress, Unwillingness to compromise and forgive. It is also too much work for them so they just want to wipe the slate clean and begin with someone they don't have a history with. Unfortunately, they bring this same pattern into new relationships.
