Because the "B" drive designation is only for floppy disks. So if you had a second floppy, it'd be called "b:"

I think later versions of windows nixed the b: drive all together, though.

a long long time ago... there was a b drive. even before that there was an a drive.

the a drive was originally the floppy disk drive.
the b drive turned out to be a second floppy disk drive but was then later also created a hard floppy (forget what it's called) that measured to be about 2"X2" in size.
