Brasso & a soft cloth will do it without damaging the copper

I have used this tecnique many times , I use softscrub for this and it comes out like new and no swirls or scratching.

Try Brasso, it should give it a good shine.

try tomatoe sauce or paste
I use it all the time to clean all my copper
