Yes, they do this to artificially maintain a higher price for the crop. If they didn't do this, our farmers would be at a disadvantage to foreign growers whose costs and regulations are much less than in the U.S.
It does sound strange, but keep in mind that in the U.S. we still pay about the lowest for food as a percent of our income of any nation on earth so we can't complain too much! :-)
The prior answerer was wondering about what will happen if we start using corn and sugar beets to produce ethanol. This will cause more demand and prices will go up for those crops. It will be interesting to see whether the gov't can adapt quickly and remove "help" to those farmers and just let the free markets set the price.

yeah and you aklso know that sometime in the future there will be a food shortage in our lifetime. It will be awesome when we screwed up all our farmland by building parks and stuff. Then we become dependent on bringing food from other countries who will also be feeling from the food shortage. I'm sure they will sell it to us. My understanding is with the population growth and all etc...we will have a food shortage in about 30-40 years but you can check on that. And no ...even if there is no food shortage...why pay farmers not to work? The hell with that. What we could do is lower the amount of food we import.

Absolutely!! Your tax dollars at work!! Talk about welfare! let your representatives know that this is a DUMB idea!! If they stop these payments, I bet these farmers will find some REAL crop to grow in a short time (they will have to WORK however!!!).

Yep ....... plenty of farmers get paid for
C.R.P. acres (Conservation Reserve Program) .....
basically land that is left idle for wildlife habitat.
Sweet deal for them, but sure wish I could
get the same payments for not growing
corn, wheat, etc.
