that arent texas chainsaw, hostel, hills have eyes, or saw1,2&3.

im tired of people thinking those are good movies when they kinda sucked... hostel was alright but it was either constant sex or constant gore.

before i start i generally base the scariness of movies by whether or not i have trouble sleeping after seeing it because i usually watch them late at night when my bf gets off of work. we both love horror films.

i thought exorcism of emily rose was terrifying mostly because its based on a true story. i generally have no trouble watching scary movies then sleeping but that one i had a terrible time sleeping even with my bf in the bed with me. i told him there was no way in heaven hell or earth he was leaving me here alone after watching that! i actually had trouble sleeping for over a week after that! lol (ashamed to admit it)

jacobs ladder is an old movie but it was scary not so much because of it's content just the thought of it. the face popping up was freaky and the ending makes you just sit there like wtf.

i honestly got a little freaked by grudge 2 but it didn't cause me to have trouble going to bed. more or less the startle factor. i startle easy sometimes. i also generally watch movies after hitting a blunt a couple times (no i'm not a pot head but i have chronic pain in my shoulder and neck and got tired of popping pain killers also have anxiety it's all natural and actually recommended by some doctors where legal for medical use)

i thought white noise was pretty freaky

the horror fest films are pretty good from what i hear i only saw one and it was dark ride. it was good but not scary like they said it should be. i guessed the ending ahead of time and noticed a lot of bloopers by the editing team. i thought hostel was more gorey and saw 3 was also.

the ring 2 was a little freaky. they left it open for a third but if they make a third i guarantee it will suck. ring 2 tied together a lot of loose ends that didn't quite make sense during the first one. so it's a good follow up to watch.

i liked gothika a lot because it was freaky and had a plot. it was kind of like a mystery thriller. i hated hostel cause it didn't seem to have any form of plot what so ever it just had sex and gore. no point to it really. i really don't see where the heck they could have a second one. definitely won't waste my time watching the second one since the first sucked beyond reason.

pretty much any movie based on true events scare me more than fake movies. or movies that could be based on true events.

descent was ok but the ending ruined the whole movie and made the entire movie pointless and made it suck. once it was over i was pissed because i felt as though that was an hour and a half (give or take some minutes) that i would never get back.

boogeyman was the same way the ending made it not scary. just made it stupid.

The best horror films are the type of films which are quite uncomfortable to view, but you are compelled to watch anyways; the type of scary movie whereby the brain says "get up and leave", but the rest of the body just can't seem to move from the seat. "The Exorcist", "The Shining" and "The Changling" are just few such examples. However, for tried and true, unrelenting horror, might I recommended a few titles with a more exotic, European flair, such as Lucio Fulci's "Zombie", "City of the Living Dead" and/or "The Beyond".......and let's not forget the one European title which always finds it's way into the top ten list of horror movies, but for some reason, has hardly ever been seen by mainstream audiences.....which is Dario Argento's "Suspiria". Any of these titles will guarantee a substantially sleepless night. I hope this helps ya!!!!!

The first that comes to mind after all the years since I saw it is" The Hitcher" with Rutger Howard. I never forgot it. Dracula starring Frank Langella and Lawrence Olivia. Its the romantic sexy version with great special effects. Best werewolf movie was "The Howling". so good they made about 6 more sequels, but badly. One called Wolfen was eerie. "The Hunger" is a classic with David Bowie.(very sexy)

The Reanimator or Peter Jackson's Dead Alive

Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining"

"The Ring"

but if you really want to get scared, movies arent the best. Try reading some books or playing Doom 3 or FEAR at 1600x1200 resolution on a 20+" display in the dark

Not really a movie, try the Discovery Channel series called, "A Haunting"
Google video that title and select more than 20mins for a few free uploaded shows to sample the series.

The Descent

You should pay attention to the classics, ones that used suspense. Explicit gore is NOT horror-- what MIGHT happen is scarier than what is happening.

I'd recommend this one for starters: "The Pit and the Pendulum" (1961)

Evil Dead (1 for scary, 2 for scary and funny)
Pumpkin head (classic monster movie)
Hellraiser (WTF kind of scary)
The Descent ( instant classic, very good)
Pulse ( if you like stuff like the ring or the grudge)
you can always go with The Exorcist, but I assume you've seen it and also I've heard it doesn't scare as much if one doesn't believe in God, so to each his own. Those are all good though.
