A tight curl, a derogatory reference to Black people.

Let me get ALL of you straight! Blacks DO NOT have exclusivity on having nappy hair. There's other races on this planet that can fall into that category. Some Jews and Mediterranean Descent People have very kinky hair. People, this question shows pure ignorance. There's many Blacks who have fine, loosely curled hair. Our mixture of nationalities speak for itself. I wish we could get past the debasement of Black People-it proves nothing. Don Imus is an horrible, demon looking racist who had no business talking about those women who happen to hold a 4.0 GPA. Oftentimes, older Whites feel defeated when they see young Non-Whites doing something constructive. It tarnishes their Superiority Complexes. The only way they feel better about themselves is to assassinate someone's character by being mean and hateful. How can anyone feel good about themselves by making profane statements about a group of women who are by far more intelligent than he'll ever be in a lifetime.

Just to continue the conversation, seeing no one has any references or history for the term, and since it has been reported and interpreted by a wide public, I'll tell you what I THOUGHT it meant when I heard it. Towel-head has been a derogatory term for Sikhs and Muslims and other groups who wear turbans as a sign of respect to divinity, similar to Jewish tradition. I THOUGHT this new (to me) term- nappy-headed- referred to the British term for diaper, a nappy, which is also a white cloth by derivation. I THOUGHT Imus was stabbing at the team's presumed connections to diverse religions and their youth. That's what I told my eleven-year old daughter. Oops? I guess not, but perhaps yes. I'd love to hear Imus tell us what he meant, honestly and apologetically. That's the nature and beauty and danger of slang; it relies on context and intent more than fixed language. I bet Jay Leno will not be using the H word for awhile- it has a new context. We white guys have to watch our mouths. RIck Rayfield, Liberal Studies, St Joseph College

Colored folk have hair that resembles velcro when they aren't doing anything to it. That tight curl or nap is what Imus was referring too. So the nappy headed blacks got all worked up because Imus talked about the Nappy Hair of the team and Sharpton (who's hair is not really nappy since he has it done) has another soapboax to get up on and act offended. Hope I helped you understand what nappy headed is all about.

Nappy-headed means very tight curls that are very soft and spongy, like that of many African-Americans. Something covered with nap or downy will often meet that description. Some refer to it as kinky.

It's a racist slur against black people whose hair is tightly curly. And "ho" is slang for whore. Both remarks are crude and should have no place in our language.
