I was just wondering because a whale washed up on a local beach and a friend said they blow them up...but im not too sure about that one. Anyone know?

They usually either find a museum that is willing to cart them away to use the bones for an exhibit or (more often) they get a bulldozer to dig a giant hole in the beach that they can push the carcass into and then cover it over again.

If they blew them up there would be tons of smelly flesh scraps all over the beach that would need to be hunted down and then buried.

If there is just one whale, the state department of natural resources or fish and game will come pick up the animal. Colleges may also come out and pick up the animal. Research will then be done by the party that picked up the animal to take samples and perform a necropsy (animal autopsy) to see why the whale died. Tests will also be performed to see how old the whale was when it died, as well as determining gender. After the tests are completed, the animal may be cremated or become part of a compost heap. Parts of the animal may be frozen for further research at a later time. If there are many whales, such as a mass stranding, the leftover carcasses (after sample collection) are buried in the sand, usually above the tide line at the base of sand dunes. The holes for the carcasses are deep, dug by a backhoe or other machinery.

I saw a video on Spike TV's World's Most Amazing Videos of a beached whale getting blown up....not sure if they always do this but there were peices flying everywhere! (sorry for the graphic image)

Well they did try blowing one up once in 1970, but it didn't work out too well...
