In July of 1863, approximately 75,000 Confederate troops under the command of General Robert E. Lee attempted to dislodge an entrenched Union army of 83,000 under the command of Major General George Meade from the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In three days of ferocious fighting, Lee made no headway in dislodging the Union Army. Both sides suffered horrendous casualties, with 23,000 Union losses and 28,000 Confederate losses. The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the turning point of the American Civil war, and marked the end of attempts by the Confederacy to invade the Union. It is also considered a major defeat for the Confederacy, and one from which they never recovered.

Knowing that the time was short for the Confederacy to be regarded as a nation unto themselves, Lee decided to go North and get behind the Union lines and forward to New York City , Philadelphia or Washington DC in the back way to force a possible peace. In the meantime, his forces were not well suited for travel and needed boots desperately. The Confederacy was aware of knowing a boot maker and repairer at Gettysburg. While at Gettysburg, Union forces were in pursuit and arrived from Maryland to stop any further Southern advance. For the next 3 days, that is July 1-3, 1863, the Union and Confederacy clashed at Gettysburg and would psychologically speaking decide whether the North had turned the tide of the war in their favor and thus eliminating any further threat from outsiders to the Confederate cause or giving the Confederacy their long-needed victory in the North thus providing the opportunity to be recognized as a sovereign nation and possibly receiving necessary assistance from a cotton hungry Great Britain. The battle was fierced over the first 2 days and the Union was able to stem the tide . Lee realized that time was short and decided to make one more forward assault to try to break through the lines to attain his goal. Pickett went forward but it was an effort that almost annihilated the Confederate forces and left Lee with no other choice but to retreat to safer ground into Maryland and Virginia. With Meade's hesitation to pursue Lee aggressively enough the Confederates were able to survive almost 2 years more. The victory at Gettysburg was costly to both sides . The Union lost 28,000 soldiers and the Confederacy lost 23,000 soldiers. Conbined with the victory at Vicksburg, Mississippi by Union forces under Grant on July 4, 1863 the Confederacy last desperate effort to gain diplomatic relations and a much needed military and morale booster had failed and proved to be the turning point in the Civil War.The Confederacy would have to fight a defensive war and a guerilla-typed warfare to survive and possibly tire the North out enough to still gain a truce and preserve their way of life.
