I had two fish and one of them was pregnant when I got her. She had babies (5 that I could count, I'm guessing she ate the others and 2 died...so 3 left) and I'm not sure how to care for them. I've separated the two adult fish from the fry, so when can I move them all back in together?

I think they're guppies (skinny ones) with speckled tails. If that matters.

Everyone is right about waiting for them to get big enough not to become lunch.
Here is an average growth chart:
Please keep in mind that this will vary according to care (especially feeding), and genetics. However, I have included this for general reference. Please note that females may grow much larger than the males.

Male Body length not including tails.

* New born: 6 mm
* One Week: 7 mm
* Two Weeks: 1 cm
* One month: 1.5 cm
* Two months: 2 cm
* Three months: 2.5 cm
* Six months: 3 - 3.3 cm
* Full grown: 3.5 - 4 cm

They should be fed 4 - 8 times a day with baby brine shrimp, hard boiled egg yolk mixed with a few drops dechlorinated water to make a paste (small amounts or you'll cloud your water), daphnia and/or microworms. People have found feeding with microworms will make them grow much faster. There is also liquid fry food on the market in a toothpaste type tube. Use sparingly though as it will dirty up the water quickly.

The water should be kept around mid 70's to 80 and LOTS of light! Average fish needs 10 hours per day to keep producing Vitamin D. Guppy fry need about 15 hours. Anything less than 12 will cause spine deformities. Water changes are also very important because of the amount of feedings.

I always go by the size of the fry. Usually 4-6 weeks they are big enough to make it. BUT if they can fit in the adults mouth, chances are they wil... Usually with guppies you can start to tell their sex 4-6 weeks, and they are ok to place with other guppies. If there are other larger fish you may need to wait longer. Make sure you grid up the flake food small enough for the fry to eat also.

Basically when the babies are too big for the adults to eat. That can be anywhere from 4 weeks to 2 months depending on a wide variety of factors.

If you aren't sure, ???

Guppies grow to adult hood at 2 1/2 - 3 months. But if you aren't sure if they are guppies can't be sure when they are full grown.

Wait till they are big enough not to fit in the adults mouths and put them in there, if the adults bully them take them out and wait a month till they get a little bigger then put them back in.

You can put them back as soon as they are big enough not to get eaten or sucked into the filter. They will grow faster when they have a big tank to swim in.

You need to wait until they are big enough so that the other fish don't eat them.

Guppies reproduce madly! Give the babies back when they are as big as mom and dad, ok?
